Die Osterweiterung aus raumwirtschaftlicher Perspektive – Prognosen regionalökonomischer Theorien und Erfahrungen aus der bisherigen Integration in Europa

The Eastern enlargement of the EU from the viewpoint of regional economics

By Konrad Lammers

Abstract

In the course of integrating Eastern Europe into the EU, the accession countries will have a good opportunity to attract industries from Western Europe and elsewhere and to catch up in per capita income. However, the catching up of the accession countries will be accompanied by an increase in regional divergence within these countries. This is concluded from previous experience with integration in Europe, especially the Southern enlargement, and the economic performance of and within the cohesion countries. The performance of the accession countries so far, already highly integrated with Western Europe in terms of trade and direct investment before their legal membership, confirms these conclusions.
